Bolsonaro asks for passport return
Richard Lourenço/Rede Câmara – 25.3.2024

Jair Bolsonaro’s defense once again asked the Federal Supreme Court (STF) to return the former president’s passport. The document had been retained during the operation carried out by the Federal Police earlier this year.

Bolsonaro’s defense had handed over the former president’s passport on February 8, in Brasília. The determination of the seizure was authorized by STF Minister Alexandre de Moraes and is part of the PF operation that investigates an alleged criminal organization that acted in the attempted coup d’état and abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, to obtain political advantage by maintaining the then President of the Republic in power.

Moraes, in turn, has not yet made any decision about returning the passport. During this period, another fact became public and weighs against Bolsonaro: the fact that he stayed at the Hungarian Embassy for two days. After the episode, the STF minister gave the former president 48 hours to explain the situation.

The defense reported that there was no concern about preventive detention and that”it is illogical to suggest that his visit to the embassy [da Hungria] and a foreign country was a request for asylum or an attempt to escape.” “Former president Jair Bolsonaro has an agenda of political commitments, national and international, which, despite no longer holding a mandate, remains extremely active, including in relation to foreign leaders aligned with the conservative profile”, he said.

The defense said that the former president has a political agenda with the government of Hungary, with whom he has a well-known alignment, which is why he always maintained close dialogue with the authorities of that country, dealing with strategic international policy issues of interest to the conservative sector.

“Any conclusions arising from the article published by the North American newspaper, in the sense that the former president had an interest in some kind of diplomatic asylum, are therefore mistaken, a conclusion that can be reached simply by considering the posture and attitude he always maintained in regarding the investigations directed at him”, he said.
