A 4-year-old child died last Friday (26) at the Padre Roberto Cordeiro Martins Emergency Care Unit (UPA), in Divinópolis, Central-West region of Minas Gerais. The girl had already been treated at the health unit and sent home days before. The UPA would be facing overcrowding.
Thallya Beatriz was reportedly taken to UPA by her parents last Wednesday (24), with pain in her leg and swelling in her eye. The child underwent exams and x-rays, received serum and intravenous dipyrone and released the girl with a prescription for amoxicillin. Two days later, on Friday (27), the parents took Thallya to the UPA again. The child was sweating a lot and died shortly afterwards.
The Brazilian Institute of Public Policies (Ibrapp), the foundation that manages the UPA, reported that Thallya was seen in the pediatrics unit 15 minutes after arriving at the scene and was assisted by medical professionals. The institute confirmed that the girl underwent tests days before, ‘without showing any changes’.
The Divinópolis UPA has been facing overcrowding in recent days due to dengue fever and respiratory diseases. The unit would have reached 300% pediatric occupancy in previous days.
In a statement, Divinópolis City Hall lamented Thallya’s death and reported that the entire macro-region faces a ‘very serious situation’, with at least 16 children in the UPA in question awaiting transfer to a hospital. The city hall claims to have contacted private hospitals to check the availability of beds and will also analyze Thallya’s death to ‘better understand the case’.
