In an unusual climate situation for the region and time of year, Bia Haddad Maia overcame yet another challenge. The Brazilian guaranteed her place among the 16 tennis players remaining in the WTA 1000 in Madrid by beating the American Emma Navarro. With a double 6/4, the national tennis player overcame the Spanish capital’s 13ºC and the tournament’s 19th seed. Now, she will have the Greek Maria Sakkari, number 6 in the world, to seek a place in the quarterfinals.
At the beginning of the match, attention was drawn to the fact that Bia was on the court wearing thermal pants under her dress. The 1h52 clash had barely ended and the Brazilian had already resorted to her tracksuit and, during a break, even blew her nose. Apparently, the weather condition was another obstacle that the tennis player overcame this Saturday (27).
Bia had a promising start, breaking Navarro’s serve in the third game of the first half. However, the first set was full of swings for both sides, so much so that Bia was leading 2/1, suffered a comeback and sought a new draw at 3/3. Afterwards, the Brazilian managed another break to take victory in the partial.

Then, the two tennis players stabilized their services during the first eight games of the second set. However, Bia showed more coolness, not because of the weather, but rather because of her calmness in the decisive moments. She broke her opponent’s serve and opened 5/4 and didn’t hesitate in her serve to close the duel.
