In April, the cost of the basic food basket rose in 10 of the 17 Brazilian capitals analyzed by the National Survey of the Basic Food Basket, released monthly by the Inter-Union Department of Statistics and Socioeconomic Studies (Dieese).
Between March and April, the biggest increases in the basic food basket were recorded in the northeastern capitals. The one that showed the biggest increase in the period was Fortaleza, with an increase of 7.76%, followed by João Pessoa (5.40%), Aracaju (4.84%), Natal (4.44%), Recife (4. 24%) and Salvador (3.22%). The biggest drops occurred in Brasília (-2.66%), Rio de Janeiro (-1.37%) and Florianópolis (-1.22%).
The most expensive basket in the country was observed in São Paulo, where the set of basic foods cost, on average, R$822.24, followed by Rio de Janeiro (R$801.15).
In cities in the North and Northeast, where the composition of the basket is different, the lowest average values were recorded in Aracaju (R$ 582.11), João Pessoa (R$ 614.75) and Recife (R$ 617.28) .
Based on the cost of the most expensive basket in the country – that of São Paulo – and, taking into account the constitutional determination that establishes that the minimum wage must be sufficient to cover the expenses of a worker and his family with food, housing, health, education, clothing, hygiene, transport, leisure and pensions, Dieese estimated that the ideal minimum wage should be R$6,912.69 in April, which represents 4.90 times its current value, established in R$ 1,412.00
