Rio – Rio’s justice system made military police officer Wesley Pereira de Lima Nascimento a defendant this Friday (26) for the murder of elderly woman Severina da Silva Nunes, aged 69, which occurred in an action in Morro do Turano, in Rio Comprido , in the North Zone of Rio, in June last year. The elderly woman was having a coffee in a community bar at the time she was shot.

Judge Alessandra da Rocha Lima Roidis, from the 4th Criminal Court of the Court of Justice of Rio (TJRJ), accepted the complaint from the Public Ministry of Rio (MPRJ), made this Thursday (25). The judge ordered Wesley’s removal from his position as PM and the suspension of his gun possession. For Roidis, this measure serves to protect witnesses and society itself.

Furthermore, the PM is prohibited from maintaining any type of contact, including by telephone, with the victim’s family and other witnesses, and must maintain a minimum distance of 500 meters. If he does not comply with the precautionary measures, the agent may be arrested.

According to investigations, the PM, stationed at the Turano Police Pacification Unit (UPP) at the time, had his rifle out of the vehicle window even without any risk to the life or physical integrity of the police officers or third parties.

In the complaint sent to the Court, prosecutor Alexandre Themístocles said that the police officer opened fire towards the top of the community in an “unreasonable and disproportionate way”. Soon after, the agent got out of the vehicle and continued walking and shooting in the same direction. The prosecution also highlighted that Wesley knew that there were people in that region and that he knew the results they could achieve through the illegal and unnecessary use of weapons.

Remember the case

Severina Nunes was shot on June 15, 2023 in a bar on Rua Joaquim Pizarro, one of the access roads to Morro do Turano. At the time, Kécia de Souza da Silva, 30 years old, who was eight months pregnant, was injured by shrapnel.

The elderly woman was rescued and taken to the Souza Aguiar Municipal Hospital, in the center of Rio, but she did not survive her injuries. Kécia was taken to the same unit, where she received care for her baby. In relation to the woman’s case, judge Alessandra Roidis referred the case against Wesley to the Military Justice Audit.

Residents reported that the police came into the community shooting and that at the time the victim was shot there was no confrontation. On the day of the incident, the Military Police claimed that criminals attacked the agents, which led to a fightback and a conflict.

The case was investigated by the Capital Homicide Police Station (DHC). The PM’s General Inspectorate also investigated the circumstances of the incident.

Affectionately nicknamed Milonha by her neighbors, Severina was considered the joy of the family and her nephews’ favorite aunt. The elderly woman was buried in the São Francisco Xavier Cemetery, in Caju, in the Port Zone of Rio.
