Cash and carry stores in Minas Gerais recorded significant revenue of almost R$25 billion last year, according to data from the Brazilian Supermarket Association (Abras).

In this sense, MartMinas leads the local ranking, with R$9.43 billion in revenue and 81 stores, ranking seventh nationally in the supermarket segment. Meanwhile, Supermercados BH stands out as the only Minas Gerais chain in the top 5 nationally, with almost R$17.4 billion in revenue in 2023.

The five largest wholesale stores in Minas Gerais, according to Abras, total 317 units distributed throughout the municipalities of Minas Gerais. MartMinas Atacado e Varejo and Dom Atacadista lead the local ranking.

  1. MartMinas Wholesale and Retail and Dom Atacadista: R$9.43 billion and 81 stores;
  2. ABC: R$4.48 billion and 72 stores;
  3. Mining Support: R$4.14 billion and 57 stores;
  4. Bahamas Group: R$4.01 billion and 77 stores;
  5. Villefort Wholesaler: R$2.9 billion, and 30 stores.

In 2023, the cash-and-carry sector saw the opening of 25 units in Minas Gerais. The president of the Minas Gerais Supermarkets Association (Amis) highlights that the sector’s growth is evident. However, he notes that many of these units emerged from the transformation of existing stores, without necessarily representing new points of sale.

At a national level, Atacadão takes the lead as the largest cash and carry retailer, with 361 stores and revenue of R$79.11 billion. Assaí comes in second place, with 288 stores and revenue of R$72.80 billion. Overall, the 23 main cash-and-carry chains in Brazil achieved total revenue of R$300 billion last year, distributed among 2,041 stores across the country, providing direct employment for 369,412 people.

Finally, the important role that wholesalers play in the economic panorama of both Minas Gerais and Brazil as a whole is evident. Furthermore, with constant growth and an attractive business model for consumers and entrepreneurs, these chains continue to expand and consolidate their presence in the retail market.
