Unhealthiness and non-compliance with animal welfare precepts made up the scenario of yet another clandestine slaughterhouse embargoed by the Animal Products Team of the Integrated Preventive Inspection (FPI) of the São Francisco River Basin, which is carrying out its 13th stage in the Agreste of Alagoas.

The irregular slaughter of pigs was caught in Arapiraca, where 650kg of animal products and by-products were seized, including four pig carcasses, as well as their heads and viscera. Irregular activity was observed to be in full swing during the night. “This was carried out in a completely unsanitary place, without any hygiene or control over waste disposal”, explained the team coordinator.

During the FPI action, the tools used in clandestine slaughter were also seized, in order to prevent the continuity of activities carried out on site.
In a house located next to where the clandestine slaughter took place, there were freezers and a refrigerator full of by-products from this irregular slaughter, in poor conservation and storage conditions, not complying with sanitary standards.

During slaughter in clandestine slaughterhouses, there may be, for example, animals that died as a result of some disease, which leads to meat contamination and, consequently, complications for the consumer’s health. Only inspection can prevent such occurrences. In addition to bringing risks to the health of the population, the practice also harms certified slaughterhouses, with unfair competition, as illegal ones do not commit to the investments that must be made to operate regularly.

The site was embargoed due to the lack of a license to operate by the Environmental Institute (IMA), having been fined for this same reason, so the Environmental Police Battalion (BPA) took the person responsible to the Police Station to draw up a safety report. Occurrence. Those responsible were also charged with the practice of clandestine slaughter and non-compliance with animal welfare precepts, by the Alagoas Agricultural Defense and Inspection Agency (ADEAL).

The FPI aims to improve the environmental quality of the São Francisco River Basin and the quality of life of its people. The work takes place continuously and permanently. To this end, environmental damage is diagnosed and administrative, civil and criminal measures are adopted with the induction of public policies.

In total, 28 public institutions/agencies and organized civil society entities make up the Rio São Francisco FPI. They are divided into 13 groups depending on the purpose of the inspection. These are teams 1) Mineral Extraction and Solid Waste; 2) Products of Animal Origin; 3) Water Resources; 4) Aquatic (Predatory Fishing and Safety in Water Transport); 5) Dangerous Products; 6) Fauna; 7) Health Centers; 8) Flora; 9) Environmental Education; 10) Traditional Communities; 11) Environmental Management; 12) Dam Safety; and 13) Thirst to Learn Project.
