The solar fountain has just surpassed the 42 gigawatts (GW) of installed power in Brazil, which is equivalent to the capacity of three Itaipu hydroelectric plants (14 GW), reported the Brazilian Photovoltaic Energy Association (Absolar). Only this year, have already been added plus 5 GW of solar energy in the Brazilian electrical matrix.

The participation of the solar source is today equivalent to 18% of installed capacity of the Brazilian electrical matrix and approximately 10% of energy generation. According to Absolar’s calculations, the photovoltaic sector has already avoided the emission of 51.3 million tons of CO2 in electricity generation.

According to the entity, since 2012, when solar sources began to grow in the country, more than R$199.3 billion have been invested and around 1.2 million green jobs have been created, guaranteeing more than R$61.8 billion in revenue from public coffers.

In distributed generation, the country already has 28.6 GW of installed power from solar sources. This is equivalent to around R$141.3 billion in investments, R$42.2 billion in revenue and more than 860 thousand green jobs accumulated since 2012, spread across the five regions of Brazil, reports Absolar.

In the centralized generation segment, large solar plants have more than 13.4 GW of power in the country, with around R$58 billion in accumulated investments and more than 404 thousand green jobs created since 2012.

“In addition to accelerating the decarbonization of economic activities and helping to combat global warming, solar sources play an increasingly strategic role in the competitiveness of productive sectors, relief for the family budget, energy independence and prosperity of nations”, says Rodrigo Sauaia, president of Absolar.
