The Government of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul maintains partnerships with the Brazilian Navy, to carry out projects in different areas, benefiting the population.

To maintain and expand joint action, the governor, Eduardo Riedel, received today (23) Rear Admiral Alexandre Amendoeira Nunes, who on May 3 will take command of the 6th Naval District in Ladário.

“We have partnerships with the State, which we will continue and increase. One of the fronts of cooperation is fighting forest fires in the Pantanal and training fire brigades. In addition to medical and social assistance for riverside communities, and even medical evacuation using aircraft”, explained Admiral Amendoeira.

The current commander of the 6th Naval District, Vice Admiral Iunis Távora Said, also participated in the meeting this afternoon, in Campo Grande.

In December last year, the State Government, through the SES (Secretariat of State for Health), formalized cooperation, with the Navy, for the development of actions linked to the NAVIO Project (Expanded Navigation for Intensive and Optimized Surveillance) which aims to provide a better quality of life and better health care for the riverside population in Mato Grosso do Sul.

The action serves riverside communities in the regions of Corumbá, Ladário and Porto Murtinho, with diagnosis and monitoring (of viruses in circulation). The project also takes place in partnership with Fiocruz Minas to improve the quality of life and carry out genomic monitoring of the riverside population of the Paraguay River.

The project, which lasts 5 years, began on November 25th last year on the route between Ladário and Porto Murtinho. In February, the project arrived in Cáceres (MT), and the forecast is that by the end of the month it will reach the capital of Mato Grosso, Cuiabá.

Also in December 2023, another cooperation between the State and the Navy made it possible to carry out aeromedical evacuation operations.

Another front of work by the State, with the support of the Brazilian Navy, is in the scientific area. The technical-scientific and cultural exchange between Bioparque Pantanal and the Brazilian Navy, through the Command of the 6th Naval District, aims to increase knowledge and exchange of information, develop research programs and projects – maritime and river, inland waters and local and national biodiversity.

The agreement also seeks collaboration between the parties with the aim of promoting actions and research projects with researchers linked to the Biopark and the Brazilian Navy, supported by the economic, social and environmental pillars.

At the end of last year, researchers from the largest freshwater aquarium in the world carried out an expedition through the Pantanal biome aboard the ship Agência Escola Flutuante (AgEFlut) “Esperança do Pantanal”, from the Brazilian Navy. The partnership between the Armed Forces and the Bioparque provided the opportunity for the group of scholars from Bioparque Pantanal, UFGD (Federal University of Grande Dourados) and UNB (University of Brasília) to explore difficult-to-access places on the Paraguay River and Paraguay-Mirim.

For five days, the group got to know the unique and fascinating biome, with several characteristics that distinguish it from other ecosystems, which made it possible to collect animals and plants for research purposes and populate the Biopark’s tanks.
