Server and businessman will be charged with embezzling coffins from Linhares city hall

A 46-year-old employee of Linhares City Hall, in the North of Espírito Santo, and a 33-year-old funeral home owner will be charged with the crime of embezzlement (when the employee appropriates the city’s assets or resources). According to Civil Police investigations, the woman diverted coffins from the city hall and sold them to the businessman. They also changed values for services receivable from the municipal administration.

According to the Specialized Criminal Investigations Police Station (Deic) of Linhares, since October last year, the server had provided 15 funeral urns to the businessman for the amount of R$2,500, without the administration knowing. The information was released this Wednesday (3).

Furthermore, the server manipulated the mileage traveled by the man with the funeral home’s vehicles, in order to increase the amount that the city paid monthly to his company, which was a service provider for the city.

In total, it was determined by the police that the employee, by providing the funeral urns and manipulating the mileage traveled, earned the amount of R$ 12,600 since the beginning of the criminal practice.

The chief delegate of the Linhares Specialized Criminal Investigations Police Station, Fabrício Lucindo, explained that the servant was discovered thanks to the initiative of the city hall, which installed cameras in the place where the coffins were located.

“The employee was discovered because the city hall installed hidden cameras in the warehouse where the ballot boxes were stored and caught the moment when several of them were removed from the place and taken to the funeral home’s truck,” he said.

After the discovery, the Civil Police were called by the city hall and continued their investigations. When questioned at the police station, the two confessed to the crimes. They will be charged with the crime of embezzlement (a crime committed by a public official against the administration in general), with a penalty ranging from two to 12 years in prison, if convicted. They respond to crime in freedom.

Linhares City Hall reported that the employee’s conduct was communicated to the police authorities by the city hall itself, which effectively contributes to the investigations, and which even provided images from the site’s internal security cameras.

He reinforced that the server has been suspended from her activities until the investigations are completed. An administrative procedure was initiated and all penalties provided for by law will be adopted if the employee’s participation is proven.

Finally, the city hall reported that the contract with the company that supplied the funeral urns was suspended as soon as the municipality contacted the police authorities.
