The Governor of the State of Santa Catarina, Jorginho Mello, signed this Monday (29) Decree No. 574, declaring a public health emergency throughout the state due to SUS capacity.

The emergency declaration – until then only related to dengue fever this year – is an administrative measure that allows the public authorities to facilitate the purchase of goods and services that can in some way help to make care more efficient and reduce overcrowding.

According to data from the State Department of Health (SES), ICU beds are completely occupied in 3 of the 8 macro-regions. In Greater Florianópolis this rate is 93% this Tuesday (30/4). There are currently only 270 active beds, according to the data panel. The situation is recurring. At the beginning of his administration, Jorginho had also declared emergencies in 6 hospitals in the capital region due to lack of maintenance, but this has not been reflected in greater service capacity.

In addition to dengue, the main increase in cases is in the list of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), which can be flu, pneumonia and Covid. Patients with these breathing problems represent a significant increase in the rates of admissions to neonatal, pediatric and adult ICU beds.

According to epidemiological indicators, overcrowding in care centers represents a high health risk for the population of Santa Catarina. The decree, based on article 71 of the State Constitution, gives the governor and Secretary of Health some additional duties necessary to deal with the health emergency, with a period of 180 days to implement actions aimed at strengthening prevention and control strategies.
