The Minister of Racial Equality, Anielle Francojoined the Workers’ Party (PT). The official event for the new member of the acronym took place last Tuesday night (02/04), at Circo Voador, in Lapa, central region of Rio de Janeiro, and was attended by names such as the President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silvaand the first lady, Janja.
During the event, Lula stated that Anielle has no intention of running in this year’s elections. This, therefore, nullifies the minister’s chance of being nominated as vice-president on Eduardo Paes’ ticket, who will seek re-election to Rio’s City Hall.
”She told me that she has no intention of running for any position now in 2024. She wants to be a minister until the last moment. But, when she finishes, getting close to the end of the government, she has an election in 2026. Then, she can do some ‘talking’ and she will then want to be a candidate for something”said Lula.
In her speech, Anielle highlighted the beginning of her political life and praised her sister and former councilor Marielle Franco, murdered in March 2018 in Estácio, a neighborhood in the center of Rio.
“My political journey did not begin on March 14, 2018 [data da morte de Marielle] not even when I took office as minister. My political trajectory began to take shape in the Maré favela, when, at a very young age, my mother and sister protected me from stray bullets. It starts the day the power went out and we ran to the neighbor to get a candle.”he highlighted.
“Black bodies have always been political. We survive and we live every day resisting. I also come here because of Marielle Franco, not because of the cowardice they did to my sister, not because of the brutality they did, but because of what she means.”concluded the minister.
