In the midst of the dengue epidemic, the Secretariat of Penitentiary Administration (Seape-DF) took the lead in the fight and adopted protocols to prevent the spread of the disease among the almost 16 thousand prisoners distributed across the seven prison units in the Federal District.

This year, according to figures obtained by Correio, the total number of positive cases of dengue among those in custody was 49 and there were no deaths of inmates or criminal police officers. According to the ministry, of the 49 cases of the disease, 35 were in the DF Women’s Penitentiary (PFDF), eight in the Provisional Detention Center 2 (CDP 2), three in the Penitentiary Progression Center (CPP), two in the DF 1 Penitentiary ( PDF 1) and one at the Internment and Reeducation Center (CIR).

Still at the beginning of February, at the height of dengue infections in the capital, Seape made changes to the list of items authorized for prisoners, the so-called “cobal”, and authorized visitors to bring repellents. The measure was published in the Official Gazette of the Federal District (DODF) in the first week of February and remains valid.

According to the rules, repellents can be supplied monthly and must be in a 200ml transparent plastic packaging, the same rule for hygiene items, such as toothpaste or liquid soap. Seape-DF also determined that the authorized repellent must not have any type of alcohol in its composition. Furthermore, it must be transparent, like an ointment, cream or gel.

In addition to the introduction of repellents, the department adopts other protocols to combat Aedes aegypti, including cleaning and collecting trash and debris, as well as periodic sweeps of the internal perimeter to identify and eliminate any outbreak. This work is carried out exceptionally by the Repair Center of each unit, made up of re-educated students classified for internal work. The ministry stated that fumigation is carried out in prison units.

Numbers

The Federal District remains the national leader in the number of arbovirus cases: 6,804.0 per 100,000 inhabitants. Until yesterday afternoon, data from the Monitoring Panel of the Ministry of Health (MS) indicated 191,673 probable cases of dengue in the capital, 206 confirmed deaths from the disease and 51 under investigation.

The Department of Health published the route of the smoke cars. Yesterday, vehicles circulated in the regions of Núcleo Bandeirante, Park Way, Riacho Fundo 1 and 2, Samambaia, Fercal and Brazlândia. Today, the cities covered are Sol Nascente and Samambaia.

The recommendation from Environmental Surveillance is that people open doors and windows in their homes when the ultra-low volume insecticide (UBV) passes through, to increase the product’s effectiveness. Applications will be made from 4am to 6am and from 5pm to 7pm.
