One of the series’ greatest cameos played a character that had already been played by another actress previously.

We said goodbye to it forever long ago, but The Big Bang Theory was a sitcom that lasted more than 10 years and managed to be one of those that end up being part of popular culture. Since it came to an end in 2019, the main actors of the famous sitcom have continued to participate in different projects, but Sheldon, Leonard, Penny and company have become so deeply ingrained in the audience that we will always remember them for their charismatic characters.

Furthermore, throughout its 12 seasons, The Big Bang Theory has had the honor of receiving visits from great personalities, both actors and actresses and people linked to science, in the form of unforgettable special appearances. Some, like Stephen Hawking, Carrie Fisher, Stan Lee, James Earl Jones and Nathan Fillion, played themselves, while others, like Back to the Future star Christopher Lloyd, brought other characters to life.

Another notable cameo was that of veteran actress Kathy Bates, winner of the Oscar for Best Actress for Crazy Obsession, who first appeared at the end of season 11 to play a very special role: that of Mrs. Fowler, Amy’s mother ( Mayim Bialik).

What many of us didn’t remember at the time, however, was that Amy’s mother, Farrah Fowler, had appeared on the series before and that it wasn’t Kathy Bates who played her.

Amy’s mother first appeared on The Big Bang Theory in season 4, coinciding with the beginning of Amy and Sheldon’s relationship. However, she was played by Annie O’Donnell, who appeared in person in the fifth episode and, several years later, also lent her voice to the character in season 8.

When the show wanted to reprise the character to introduce her at Sheldon and Amy’s wedding as a woman who controls the lives of everyone around her, they decided that Kathy Bates was perfect for it. And so it was done. The actress, in fact, would return for two more episodes in the final season.

“When we met Amy’s mother in Season 4, played by actress Annie O’Donnell, it was before Amy became such a big part of the show,” co-showrunner Steve Holland explained to TVLine in 2018. “It was a unique thing in the series. Skype. [O’Donnell] did a wonderful job. But when we had the opportunity to bring [a personagem] back for a role that could be reprized [decidimos fazer uma mudança]. And Chuck Lorre had a relationship with Kathy Bates because they worked together and, well, how can you say no to Kathy Bates?”
