Doctor accused of sexual abuse against patient in AL is found dead in hospital in Bom Conselho

Doctor Paulo Evandro Napoleão Lopes, aged 38, was found dead this Tuesday morning (2), at the Monsenhor Alfredo Damaso Hospital, in Bom Conselho, in Agreste de Pernambuco. According to the Civil Police of Pernambuco (PC/PE), the case is treated as a ”death to be clarified”. The professional was accused in February 2023 of the crime of rape by a patient in Alagoas.

Paulo Evandro’s death was registered at the 136th Circumscription Police Station, in Bom Conselho. According to the statement released by the police, the 38-year-old man was found dead in the accommodation provided for doctors on duty. “Investigations have begun and are ongoing until the case is clarified,” he added.

Next to Evandro, an ampoule of medication used in the patient intubation procedure was found. According to unofficial information, but passed on to the police, the doctor was on duty and even asked a nurse for help to access the vein. But, she said she did not know what medicine was being injected.

The professional was investigated in Alagoas for involvement in a case of indecent assault against a 20-year-old patient. He allegedly committed the crime while receiving treatment at the Emergency Care Unit (UPA) in Jaraguá, in the lower part of Maceió, where he worked as an on-call attendant.

At the time, the victim registered a Police Report (BO) and in his statement said that Paulo Evandro had penetrated after performing a rectal examination – carried out to diagnose a herpes lesion in the boy’s anus.

The Chief of Operations of the 2nd Police District (2nd DP), Luciano Pereira, informed that a Police Inquiry (IP) to investigate the case had been opened. The incident would have occurred on February 11, 2023. Luciano Pereira reported that the victim registered the incident and officially gave a statement on the 13th. “Legal procedures are being carried out. We will listen to the accused and everyone who was on the team on duty on the day of the incident”, said the head of the 2nd DP at the time.

In her statement, the victim said that she had no reaction, just turned around, and that she was unable to do anything. “The doctor started to apologize, and said he had been confused, saying he thought that was what I wanted. He kept apologizing all the time and asking me not to tell anyone. I had no reaction, I just tried to stall him, as I wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible,” the boy said at the time, adding that the doctor also tried to change the focus of the conversation.

The complaint was registered at the Maceió Police Station, which at the time was still in the Pinheiro neighborhood, on Avenida Fernandes Lima. The doctor continued to deny the case, but ended up being fired from the health unit.

Furthermore, the case did not go ahead because the victim decided to withdraw from the case and the case was closed. According to the Court of Justice of Alagoas, the judge approved the withdrawal in accordance with Article 485, VIII, of the Code of Civil Procedure. And with approval, the process was terminated, as the victim did not want to continue the process.

DEATH

The Bom Conselho Police Station is investigating the case. The body was examined by the Institute of Criminalistics and sent to the Institute of Legal Medicine (IML) in Caruaru, in the same region.

Evandro is from the city of Correntes, also in Pernambuco.
