Eduardo Paes reads a speech made with ChatGPT at an event with Lula: ‘I thank Artificial Intelligence’

During the inauguration event of Impa Tech, the first undergraduate course at the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (Impa), held this Tuesday, 2nd, the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes (PSD), read a speech given by the ChatGPT, artificial intelligence (AI) tool. He said, addressing President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), that he used AI to write part of his speech “so that we have clarity and understanding of what we are doing here at this moment” (see video at the end of the text).

According to the mayor, the excerpt was written while he arrived at Impa. “I thank artificial intelligence, not my intelligence,” said Paes after reading. Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of young people in the first bachelor’s degree class and of “retaining” talent in the country, as the course aims to train professionals with mathematical knowledge capable of working in the technology and innovation market.

The project inaugurated this morning is, for the mayor, “the jewel in the crown” and represents the possibility of making Rio “the innovation capital of Latin America”. “Porto Maravalley (Impa’s entrepreneurship and innovation unit that brings together companies and startups) and Impa Tech, our Faculty of Mathematics, are at the epicenter of our vocation”, stated Paes. He also praised the federal government “through President Lula”, and said that “what we see here started way back when”.

According to Impa’s general director, Marcelo Viana, the initiative gained strength after a challenge proposed by the mayor in April 2021. Until then, Impa, which has won the Fields Medal, considered the “Nobel of Mathematics” , by Artur Ávila, in 2014, only offered postgraduate courses.

Also present at the event were First Lady Rosângela Lula da Silva, Janja, the Minister of Education, Camilo Santana, the Minister of Science and Technology, Luciana Santos, the president of the Brazilian Agency for Industrial Development, Ricardo Cappelli, members of the government municipal and federal deputies.
