Muniz Freire City Hall was notified by the Public Ministry of Espírito Santo (MPES), following reports of prejudice in the separation of students in classrooms at a school in the municipality. In a report to the agency, mothers point out that the division of classes is based on the children’s learning level and even financial conditions. The name of the institution will not be mentioned to protect minors.

What mothers say

The complaint comes from mothers of children who left kindergarten and are in the first year of elementary school. In contact with the report The Gazetteone of them, who preferred not to be identified, reported that students with greater learning difficulties were placed in one room and those with greater learning difficulties were placed in another.

In the complaint registered with MPES, another mother reports that four students with less financial means were placed in a separate class, and one of the classes had a “better teacher”.

In the document, the mother, who points out “prejudice in the division of classes” also reports that the school even held a meeting informing that the division of classes was made following a diagnosis of the kindergarten, based on the learning level of the students. students. However, most of those responsible did not agree with this diagnosis because kindergarten children were not yet in the literacy period.

Previous notification

In 2013, the Municipality of Muniz Freire had already been notified by MPES so that the separation of students in schools would avoid any discriminatory practice, which was complied with at the time.

This year, after becoming aware of new forms of separation in a municipal school in the city, the organization notified the city hall again, to ensure that the previous recommendation was duly fulfilled.

What was done by the municipality

According to MPES, in response to this second notification, the municipal school reported having adopted more inclusive criteria for class division, in accordance with the guidelines of the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC).

“In this way, students were grouped in order to provide a more effective learning environment, in which pedagogical interventions can be intentional and focused to meet the needs of each group or individual student”, informed the MP note.

What the city hall says

The report of The Gazette asked Muniz Freire City Hall about how the separation of students at school is carried out, but the municipality only highlighted that “it will strictly and strictly comply with the recommendation of the Public Ministry of this District number 01/2013 in the exact manner contained therein”.

MPES was also asked what was taken into consideration for the school to be notified and what irregularities were found at the school, but the questions were not answered.
