The veterinarian at the regional office of the State Agricultural Agency of Maranhão (AGED), in Itapecuru Mirim, Antonieta Vieira, was interviewed on the Rota 90 program this Monday (1st) on Rádio 90 FM and announced the start of the latest campaign of vaccination against Foot and Mouth Disease in the state.

State Agricultural Defense Agency of Maranhão started yesterday, Monday (30), the last stage of vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease, which will be carried out from the 1st to the 30th of April 2024. Unlike previous campaigns, this stage of the campaign will not have the possibility of extension of deadline.

The producer, after vaccinating his animals, must provide proof of the vaccine, by May 17th, in person at the AGED office where his property is registered or electronically, accessing the Maranhão Agricultural Management System ( SIGAMA), whose link is available on the AGED website (CLICK HERE)

Currently, Maranhão has 10,788,198 cattle (including cattle and buffalo herds) spread across 113,161 rural properties. Animals of all ages must be immunized during the campaign and AGED is already working to ensure that the state reaches 100% of the herd vaccinated.

“We are preparing for this stage of the campaign and we once again count on the full support of our producers, as all institutions linked to agriculture are joining efforts with AGED to ensure the success of this campaign with the aim of making Maranhão achieve sanitary status of a foot-and-mouth disease-free zone with international recognition granted by the World Organization for Animal Health”, said the president of AGED, Cauê Aragão.

Among the strategies for this vaccination campaign in Maranhão, AGED will carry out a pre-campaign across the state, in March, bringing together partners, to raise awareness among producers to vaccinate their animals in this latest vaccination campaign. There will also be an entire mobilization campaign on social media and in the press. Furthermore, in March, we will be working with all agricultural stores registered with the Agency, carrying out inspections and receiving vaccines, seeking to guarantee the supply of this input to rural producers. Assisted vaccinations only occur during the vaccination stage, that is, in April.

Perspectives for the future

When Maranhão received the classification of a vaccination-free zone, livestock production grew and, therefore, boosted the meat agroindustry sector. In the period from 2012 to 2023 and considering that the status of a foot-and-mouth-free zone with vaccination came in 2014, there was growth in the Maranhão livestock sector with the expansion of slaughterhouses, going from 0 establishments in 2012 to 12 enterprises in 2023. In the same period there was increase in the cattle herd in Maranhão, jumping from 7.4 million in 12 to 10.4 million in 2023.
