Scheduled to take place between this Friday (3) and Sunday (5), the Brazilian Canoeing Slalom and Kayak Cross Championship has been postponed. The city of Três Coroas, as well as the entire state of Rio Grande do Sul, is going through a period of heavy rain. The decision to postpone the competition came after a meeting between the Brazilian Confederation of the sport and the Regional Civil Defense.

In a note released this Tuesday (30), the Brazilian Canoeing Confederation announced that “the situation is of great complexity for the municipality of Três Coroas, due to the constant rains”. Furthermore, the text says that “the entire region is in an emergency situation, the river’s flow remains high with the possibility of flooding even more and the access roads are already showing landslides.”

Also according to the Confederation, the forecast is that rain will prevail until next Friday. On the recommendation of the Civil Defense, the Brazilian Canoe Slalom and Kayak Cross Championship had to be rescheduled for the 24th and 26th of May.

In recent days, the state of Rio Grande do Sul was once again hit by strong storms. So far, the rains have left five dead, six injured and 18 missing. In addition, almost 300 people had to leave their homes by early Tuesday evening.

After meeting with the Regional Civil Defense, based on data from the National Center for Monitoring and Alerting of Natural Disasters – CEMADEN, the situation is of great complexity for the municipality of Três Coroas, due to the constant rains, the entire region is in emergency situation, the river flow remains high with the possibility of filling even more and the access roads are already showing landslides.

The forecast is for a lot of rain until Friday (May 3rd), so, following Civil Defense recommendations, the test will need to be postponed. The competition will be rescheduled and will take place from *May 24th to 26th, 2024. (the technical bulletin will be published soon).
