Bahia should receive a new international airport with an investment of R$1.5 billion – Acorda Cidade

The Discovery Coast, a tourist and historical region in the extreme south of Bahia, will receive a state investment of R$1.5 billion for the construction of an international airport in the region. The tender for structuring the project was announced by the Infrastructure Secretariat of the Government of the State of Bahia (Seinfra), last Thursday (28). The new aviation equipment will be built in Santa Cruz Cabrália, a strategic municipality in the region.

The opening of the bidding process, which aims to hire a company to prepare the preliminary engineering project for the airport’s implementation works, will take place on May 16, at 9:30 am, at the headquarters of Seinfra’s Permanent Bidding Committee (CPL).

To Bahia Notícias, a partner of Acorda Cidade, Seinfra informed that the choice of the region to receive the equipment came from the overload of Porto Seguro Airport, which despite receiving international flights, cannot support further expansion due to the extension of the city’s urban network. In 2023, Porto Seguro received around 2 million passengers through its road network.

“Regarding the New Costa do Descobrimento International Airport, in Santa Cruz Cabrália, the investment will be R$1.5 billion. Currently, Porto Seguro Airport is the regional airport with the highest total passenger movement, but it can no longer be expanded. The construction of a new airport in the region will contribute to the development of tourism and the national and international transport of cargo, such as fish and lobsters”, explains the Secretary of Infrastructure, Sérgio Brito.

Seinfra also pointed out that the auction for construction and concession of the area is scheduled for October. The concession, in the format of a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), will have a term of 30 years and implementation is expected to take five years after the start of the first. The implementation project, however, defines that during the equipment implementation period, the company winning the bidding notice will be responsible for managing the current one in Porto Seguro.

To accommodate the high tourist and economic flow in the region, Costa do Descobrimento International Airport will have operations with general and regular aviation, offering fixed flights. The equipment must also have a landing and take-off runway 3,000 m long by 45 m wide, a size similar to Salvador International Airport, in addition to 300 m² for the passenger terminal.
