According to the World Health Organization (WHO), on average, 6% of the Brazilian population uses some type of drug. Numerous treatments are used to help this part of the population in the fight against chemical dependency. In this context, physical activity acts as an important ally in the rehabilitation process, improving self-esteem and bringing confidence to the patient.

Chemical dependency wreaks havoc on emotional and physical well-being. Generally speaking, those who abuse alcohol and drugs tend to neglect their bodies, and important components of daily health, including proper nutrition and essential exercise, are left aside. Escapism, the tendency to escape from problems, leads people to seek momentary pleasure in alcohol and other drugs that ends up leading to dependence.

According to Mônica Azevedo, founding partner of Clínica Médica Voo de Liberdade, physical activity releases endorphins that help not only with physical well-being, but mainly with mental health. “Practicing physical activity improves cardiovascular conditioning and reduces the risk of chronic diseases, as well as benefiting mental health by releasing pleasure neurotransmitters. Due to the constant and excessive use of chemical substances, the body ends up inhibiting the production of hormones that transmit satisfaction and joy,” she explains.

During the rehabilitation process, it is essential to take care of both your body and mind. The patient’s physical and mental recovery plays a crucial role in the journey of overcoming drug and alcohol use. By adopting healthy practices it is necessary to strengthen general health and promote successful recovery.

“Consequently, when practicing physical activity, the patient feels more confident and has high self-esteem with the release of hormones and substances that balance bodily functions, and is thus able to continue with the treatment, favoring a change in lifestyle and providing new horizons”, concludes Mônica.
