Death toll rises after minibus runs over worshipers in procession in Greater Recife

On Sunday night, the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu) reported that the accident left four deaths. This Monday morning (1st), the State Department of Health confirmed three deaths. However, some victims were on two different lists. According to the Jaboatão dos Guararapes city hall, five is the total number of deaths, until the last update of this report. The victims were identified as:

  • Edson Maurício Barbosa, 52 years oldwho died in the Emergency Care Unit (UPA) of Ibura, in the South Zone of Recife;
  • Amauri João de Lima, 68 years oldwho died at the Imbiribeira UPA, in the South Zone of Recife;
  • Edite Maria da Silva, 51 years oldthe place of death was not disclosed;
  • Jéssica Kelly Mendonça dos Santos, 22 years oldat Hospital da Restauração, in the Derby neighborhood, in the central area of ​​Recife;
  • Tereza Cristina Batista Silveira, 65 years old: at the Lagoa Encantada UPA in the Cohab neighborhood, in the South Zone of Recife.

The other 29 people rescued did not have their names released. The city hall reported the following:

  • Thirteen people were discharged;
  • Nine injured, aged between 5 and 67 years, they are at the Hospital da Restauração, in Derby, central area of ​​Recife;
  • Seven people of undisclosed ages are at Dom Hélder Hospital, in Cabo de Santo Agostinho, in the Metropolitan Region.

The minibus was on line 118 – Marcos Freire/Barra de Jangada, had authorization from the municipality to circulate as complementary transport and was not carrying passengers at the time of the accident. The driver fled after the collision, but was identified by the city hall.

The vehicle left the Marcos Freire bus terminal square and was heading towards the Church of Nossa Senhora do Perpétuo Socorro, in the same neighborhood. The collision occurred on Avenida Barreto de Menezes, in a stretch known as “Adelaide slope”, as it is close to the Adelaide Pessoa Câmara High School Reference School.

To g1, by telephone, the Social Service Secretary of Jaboatão dos Guararapes, Maria Jacinta da Silva, confirmed that The minibus lacked brakes during the journey.

The city hall stated that the vehicle was in good condition, having a vehicle technical inspection report from the National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (Inmetro) carried out five months ago, valid annually.

The city’s mayor, Mano Medeiros (PL), said that there was a vehicle cordoning off traffic for the procession to pass, which did not prevent the bus from passing.

“This vehicle came out of control, without authorization, because, in fact, it was not in operation. It must be made very clear that this vehicle was not operating and went through a failure, which must be pointed out by the Institute of Criminalistics, what actually happened . The entire procedure in relation to the safety of the people who were part of that procession was planned, with the personnel on the field carrying out all the necessary isolation to provide people with safety”, he stated.

g1 contacted the Civil Police to ask about the investigation into this case, but the response was sent by the Pernambuco Social Defense Secretariat (SDS). The state government regretted what happened and reported that it sent teams from the Military Fire Department and the Military, Civil and Scientific police to the location. He also stated that the case is being investigated by the Plantão de Prazeres Police Station, in Jaboatão dos Guararapes.

The city of Jaboatão reported that it sent teams from the Municipal Guard, Civil Defense and the Department of Social Assistance to the scene of the accident and that it collaborates “so that the investigations proceed with due rigor”. He also said that Mayor Mano Medeiros (PL) “determined that assistance and health teams carry out a sweep to identify the injured and the victims’ families and provide all necessary support to these people.”

The Archdiocese of Olinda and Recife said it sympathizes with Father Paulo, the community’s parish priest, and “with the entire bereaved community in this moment of pain.” He also said that he is available “to collaborate with the victims and their families, helping and contributing to overcoming this fatality” and that he requires public authorities that “the situation be investigated, with everyone involved in the accident held duly responsible.”
