The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) released, this Thursday (28), a ‘yellow alert’ for Baixada Santista and other regions of the state of São Paulo. The agency predicts up to 50 millimeters of rain until Friday morning (29).

To understand what rainfall volumes mean, the calculation must be done in millimeters and square meters, where 1 millimeter of rain is equivalent to 1 liter of water per square meter. In a case where the volume of rain recorded is 50 mm, there would be 50 liters of water in each square meter.

The institute also mentioned in the document that there is a low risk of flooding and small landslides in cities with areas prone to these situations.

Understand the classification of Inmet alerts

It means potential danger with a volume of rain between 20mm and 30mm, in addition to winds of 40 to 60 km/h. This classification represents a low risk of flooding, power outages or tree branches.

It represents an alert for dangerous situations with a volume of rain exceeding 30 mm and winds above 60 km/h. The orange alert predicts falling trees and power outages.

It is the highest alert when there is a risk of flooding and flooding. In this situation, a rainfall volume of between 80 mm and 100 mm is expected.

When identifying signs of intense winds, Civil Defense advises you to seek shelter in safe locations, away from structures susceptible to damage, such as poles, trees or electrical wiring.
