The proportion of students enrolled full-time in the public elementary school network in Rio Grande do Norte increased between 2022 and 2023, going from 7.3% to 11.2%, according to data released by the National Institute of Studies and Research Educational Anísio Teixeira (Inep).

However, the increase was not even enough to reach the Brazilian average, which was 14.4% of students enrolled full-time in the public elementary school network in 2022, rising to 17.5% in 2023.

Natal will have 9 schools and 7 CMEIs with part of the full-time vacancies

In Rio Grande do Norte, Inep recorded until this Thursday (28) a total of 6,133 enrollments in the full-time system in state and municipal public schools. In this type of teaching, the student spends at least seven hours at school.

The vacancies in the full-time model are part of an agreement between states, municipalities and the federal government through the Full-Time School Program, launched in September 2023 by the Lula government. The goal of the Ministry of Education (MEC) is to reach 3.2 million enrollments in the country by 2026, to this end, the program provides technical and financial assistance for opening vacancies.

Child education

One of the biggest bottlenecks in municipalities, even in part-time mode, is the low number of places in Early Childhood Education (daycare+pre-school).

The problem directly affects the routine of families, especially poorer mothers, who do not have the financial means to pay for a private school and cannot find a place in the public school system to leave their children and join the job market.

In Natal, for example, there are 6,624 children enrolled in the city’s daycare centers, of which only 151 are full-time. In pre-school there are 9,458 enrollments, but none full-time.

In total, the capital has 55,084 students enrolled in all stages of education, distributed among 72 Elementary Schools and 74 Municipal Early Childhood Education Centers, according to the Municipal Department of Education.
