-

This Monday (25), the state of Bahia was one of those recognized nationally by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa), as free from Foot and Mouth Disease without vaccination. The regulations published this Monday come into effect on May 2nd.

In addition to Bahia, another 15 states and the Federal District are also included in the ministry’s Ordinance No. 665: Amapá, Amazonas, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Pará, Piauí, Rio de Janeiro, Roraima, São Paulo, Sergipe and Tocantins.

According to Mapa, the ordinance also prohibits the storage, sale and use of vaccines against foot-and-mouth disease in these units of the Federation and also restricts the movement of animals and products from these locations to other areas that still practice vaccination. in the country.

The ban on the movement of animals will remain in force until the WHO (World Organization for Animal Health) grants international recognition of the sanitary status of free from foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination to all units of the Federation.

Process

The transition process from areas free from foot-and-mouth disease with vaccination to free without vaccination is foreseen in the Strategic Plan of the National Surveillance Plan for Foot-and-Mouth Disease (PE-PNEFA).

Mapa’s goal is for Brazil to become completely free of foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination by 2026.

To carry out the transition of health status, the States and the Federal District met the criteria defined in the Strategic Plan, which is aligned with the guidelines of the Land Code of the World Organization for Animal Health (OMSA).

According to Mapa, to achieve international recognition, the Organization demands the suspension of vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease and the prohibition of vaccinated animals entering the proposed states and regions for at least 12 months.

Recognition as vaccination-free opens ways for livestock products from these States to access the most demanding markets in the world.

Currently, in Brazil, only the states of Santa Catarina, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, Acre, Rondônia and parts of Amazonas and Mato Grosso have international recognition as a foot-and-mouth disease-free zone without vaccination by the OMSA.

Vaccination campaign

In April, the last immunization against foot-and-mouth disease will be carried out in the states of Bahia, Maranhão, Pará, Piauí, Rio de Janeiro, Roraima, Sergipe and part of the state of Amazonas.

For the states that will not suspend vaccination, which is the case of Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco and Alagoas, the vaccination stages against foot-and-mouth disease in 2024 continue in the months of May and November.

Vaccines must be purchased from authorized resellers and kept between 2°C and 8°C, from acquisition to the moment of use – including transport and application, already on the farm.

New needles must be used to apply the 2 mL dose to the neck of each animal, preferring the cooler hours of the day, to adequately contain the animals and apply the vaccine.

In addition to vaccinating the herd, the producer must also declare it to the animal health defense agency in his state.

The vaccination declaration must be made within the deadlines stipulated by the state veterinary service.

In case of doubt, the guideline is to seek clarification from the animal health defense executing agency, which in Bahia is the Agricultural Defense Student Agency.
