In 2022, 2,621,015 birth registrations were made in registry offices in Brazil. Of this total, 2,542,298 were children born in 2022 and registered until the first quarter of 2023. In comparison with 2021, in 2022 there was a 3.5% drop in the number of births that occurred in the year and were registered , which corresponds to a reduction of 93,556 births.

The data comes from the Civil Registry Statistics Survey, from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), released this Wednesday (27). The numbers show that the drop in birth registrations during the year was higher than the national average in the Northeast (-6.7%) and North (-3.8%) Regions, and lower in the Southeast Regions (-2.6%) , Central-West (-1.6%) and South (-0.7%).

Among the Federation Units, Paraíba showed the biggest drop (-9.9%), followed by Maranhão (-8.5%), Sergipe (-7.8%) and Rio Grande do Norte (-7.3% ). In Acre, which had 13,955 registered births, the reduction was 5.6%. Santa Catarina (2.0%) and Mato Grosso (1.8%) were the only states that showed an increase in birth registrations.

The decline in the number of birth registrations was observed for the fourth consecutive year in the historical series analyzed. Birth records occurring in 2022 were also compared with the annual average of records carried out in the period from 2015 to 2019, five years before the Covid-19 pandemic, declared in 2020 by the World Health Organization – WHO.

According to the information from the 2022 Civil Registry Statistics Survey, the reduction in birth rates and fertility in Brazil, signaled by the latest Demographic Censuses, added, to some extent, to the effects of the pandemic are elements to be considered in the study on evolution of births occurring in the country in recent years.
