Recent past: almost half of Acre’s municipalities celebrate 32 years of emancipation this Sunday

Acre is a state with several curiosities, such as the fact that it has been proclaimed autonomous Independent State of Acre three times and is the only state in Brazil to have a bridge protected against earthquakes. Another curiosity that permeates the history of this state is that this Sunday, April 28th, ten municipalities celebrate the anniversary of political emancipation.

These are Acrelândia, Bujari, Capixaba, Epitaciolândia, Jordão, Marechal Thaumaturgo, Porto Walter, Rodrigues Alves, Porto Acre and Santa Rosa do Purus. Nine of the 10 locations became cities as of State Law No. 1,028, of 04/28/1992, sanctioned by then governor Edmundo Pinto. The municipality of Porto Acre joined the list following another decree – number 161, dated 04/22/2009.

A significant part of the municipalities emerged from some dismemberments. Acrelândia gained emancipation after the division of Plácido de Castro and Senador Guiomard; Epitaciolândia is born from Brasiléia; and Marshal Thaumaturgo of Cruzeiro do Sul.

Acrelândia

With an estimated population of 14,021 people, the first planned city in Acre was created by state law nº 1,025, of April 28, 1992, created from the separation of parts of the municipalities of Plácido de Castro and Senador Guiomard. The municipality has achieved great agricultural development, but it is still a municipality that is in a growth phase in several areas.

It limits to the north with Amazonas and Rondônia, to the south and southwest with the municipality of Plácido de Castro, to the east with Bolivia and to the west with the municipality of Senador Guiomard.

Bujari

The municipality of Bujari, 22 km from Rio Branco, turns 32 this Sunday (28). The city, which has 12,917 thousand inhabitants, according to data from the state government, was elevated to the category of municipality in 1992, through state law 1,028.

The territory of Bujari is limited to the north by Amazonas, to the south by the municipality of Rio Branco, to the east by the municipality of Porto Acre and to the west by the municipality of Sena Madureira.

Capixaba

The municipality, which is located between Rio Branco and Xapuri, has 10,392 inhabitants. On April 28, 1992, the municipality of “Capixaba” was officially established, separating itself from the cities of the two municipalities on which it borders. In October of the same year, the first municipal election took place.

It limits to the north and northeast with the municipality of Rio Branco, to the south with Bolivia, to the east with the municipality of Plácido de Castro and Bolivia and to the west with the municipality of Xapuri. The municipality is bathed by the Abunã River (which establishes the border between Brazil and Bolivia) and the Acre River.

Epitaciolândia

Another municipality that was born from a dismemberment was Epitaciolândia, which was separated from the city of Brasiléia. With 18,757 people, it is limited to the north by the municipality of Xapuri, to the south and east by Bolivia and to the west by the municipality of Brasiléia.

The city is full of shops and hotels, which receive many tourists who cross the bridge to the commercial area of ​​the city of Cobija, in Pando, Bolivia.

Jordan

The municipality of Jordão, one of the cities with the largest amount of indigenous population, accounts for just 3% of Acre’s territory. The city, with 9,222 inhabitants, is crossed by the Jordan and Tarauacá rivers. To get to the city, you need to use transport such as boat or plane, as it is one of the isolated cities in Acre.

Jordão is located more than 600 kilometers in a straight line from the capital Rio Branco. The municipality was separated from the city of Tarauacá.

Marshal Thaumaturgo

The city originated from Seringal Minas Gerais and the municipality was created from a division of the municipality of Cruzeiro do Sul. With 17,093 inhabitants, the city completes 32 years of political emancipation this Sunday and is one of the isolated cities in Acre, in which It is only possible to arrive by boat or plane.

With the definition of the territorial extension, through the Treaty of Petrópolis, signed between Bolivia and Brazil, the limits with Peru were also defined, which resulted in a series of conflicts at the time (1904).

Porto Acre

The municipality of Porto Acre, which was once called Puerto Alonso, was one of the main stages of the Acre Revolution. Conflicts between Bolivians and Brazilians ended with the annexation of Acre to Brazil in 1903 and the city received the name it is still called today. With 16,639 thousand people, the municipality is limited to the north by the state of Amazonas, to the south by the municipalities of Bujari and Rio Branco, to the east by the municipalities of Rio Branco and Senador Guiomard.

Just like other municipalities, Porto Acre was also born from a split, this time, from Rio Branco. Access to the municipality is by river via the Acre River and by road via State Highway AC-10. The municipality of Porto Acre joined the list following another decree – number 161, dated 04/22/2009.

Porto Walter

The municipality of Porto Walter was separated from Cruzeiro do Sul, by State Law No. 1,068 of 1992. With 10,735 people, the first residents were indigenous people from the Arara, Náuas, Amoaças, Kampas and Kulinas ethnic groups, who are still found in the municipality today.

It is limited to the north by the municipality of Cruzeiro do Sul, to the south by the municipality of Marechal Thaumaturgo, to the east by the municipality of Tarauacá and to the west by Peru, a country that borders Brazil.

Rodrigues Alves

Rodrigues Alves, a municipality in Acre, 627 km from the capital Rio Branco, celebrates 32 years of foundation this Sunday. Despite its foundation being on April 28th, the anniversary celebration takes place on July 28th, being celebrated by traditional marches from all schools in the city.

Located in the west of the State of Acre, the municipality is located on the right bank of the Juruá River and was once called the land of the Náuas. The municipality is home to the Serra do Divisor National Park, an integral nature protection conservation unit located on the border with Peru, with territory distributed in other municipalities. There, several scientific studies point out, is the greatest biodiversity on the planet, in plants, animals and insects. According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the municipality has 14,938 inhabitants.

Santa Rosa do Purus

The municipality has 6,723 inhabitants, according to IBGE, ranking as the smallest city in the state of Acre. The city is also one of the most isolated in the state, and it is only possible to visit the city by boat and small planes.

Its territory was separated from the municipality of Manoel Urbano. Located on the banks of the Purus River, its limit begins at the international border between Brazil and Peru. The municipality is also limited to the municipalities of Feijó and Manoel Urbano.

Anniversary of municipalities

Although April 28 marks the date of the political emancipation of these municipalities, some cities chose other dates to celebrate their anniversaries, with special programs promoted by the city hall of each location.
