The mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paesand the Municipal Secretary of Urban and Economic Development, Chicao Bulhões, announced on Wednesday night (27/03) that the municipality will promote urban requalification, the activation of historic buildings and the creation of a new tourist spot in the city, based on the revitalization of Rua da Carioca. The presentation of the project took place in a lively ceremony with a samba circle, in a property on the traditional downtown road, which is in the process of being transformed into a beer hub. The first establishments will open soon. During the event, the first seven Terms of Adhesion to the Reviver Rua da Cerveja project were also signed and the certificate and participation plaque were handed out to the entrepreneurs.

The requalification project is from the Subsecretariat of Urban Planning, of the Municipal Secretariat of Urban and Economic Development (SMDUE). The intervention areas are in Praça João Calvino, at the connection between Rua Uruguaiana and Largo da Carioca, and Rua da Carioca. This last road will see a reduction from three to two vehicle lanes, widening of the sidewalk and installation of new street furniture, flower beds and lighting.

During the ceremony, the mayor celebrated the initiative and said that the moment is one of celebration: “This is the time to celebrate and, soon, enjoy the revitalized Rua da Carioca. And long live the beer“, said Eduardo Paes.

Secretary Chicão Bulhões reinforced that the project will transform Rua da Carioca into a major gastronomic and craft beer production hub: “We are providing an incentive for the revitalization of these townhouses and a monthly financial incentive for companies to spread out here. We are going to carry out an urban intervention, increasing the sidewalks, changing this entire area that joins Reviver Centro. The objective is to have more residents, more residential properties, change this part of the city and, of course, give opportunities to tourists as well. Furthermore, promote economic development, generate employment and investment“.

Interventions in the region will be another incentive for Rua da Cerveja. Signing the agreement for future establishments is the last step so that entrepreneurs can receive the amount of up to R$200,000 for the renovation of properties and up to R$15,000 for monthly cost assistance, with transfers lasting between 30 and 48 months. Created to assist in the recovery of the central region, the project aims to boost the reoccupation of the 37 stores on the street, around 50%, which closed as a result of the economic crisis and the pandemic.
