  • Children: 1 dose at 9 months and 1 booster dose at 4 years of age.
  • From 5 years old, teenagers, adults and seniors: just one dose. Anyone who does not have proof or certainty that they have already received the vaccine must receive a new vaccine.

According to the folder, effective protection against the disease occurs ten days after vaccination.

“As a result, anyone traveling to rural areas, regions in contact with forests or wild areas must take the vaccine at least ten days before traveling”, advises the note.

According to the Department of Health, the objective of the alert issued this Tuesday (7) is to raise awareness of “residents of neighborhoods with potential for the circulation of the virus and which have historically been a route to the disease.”

The areas where circulation of the virus has already been identified are located in the following reference health centers (HCs): Carlos Gomes, Sousas, Joaquim Egídio, Vila Ipê, Paranapanema, Esmeraldina, Taquaral, São Vicente, Centro, Orosimbo Maia, Barão Geraldo and Village.

“Other areas of the municipality with environmental characteristics favorable to the presence of transmitting mosquitoes, such as regions with forests and forests, also deserve attention”, he highlights in a note.

Campinas has not recorded positive cases of the disease in monkeys since 2019. “Animals are not transmitters of yellow fever, but rather the main victims of the disease. The presence of sick animals serves as a ‘warning’ that the virus is circulating and, when contaminated, primates hardly survive”, explains the folder.

A yellow fever is an acute febrile infectious disease caused by a virus transmitted by infected mosquitoes. It has two transmission cycles: wild (when there is transmission in rural or forest areas) and urban.

In rural or forest areas, monkeys are the main hosts and transmission occurs through the bite of infected Haemagogus and Sabethes mosquitoes.

In cities, the disease can be transmitted mainly by mosquitoes of the Aedes aegypti species.

The initial symptoms of yellow fever are:

  • fever
  • chills
  • intense headache
  • back pains
  • general body pain
  • nausea and vomiting
  • fatigue and weakness

In severe cases, a person infected with yellow fever may develop symptoms such as:

  • High fever
  • jaundice
  • bleeding
  • eventually shock and multiple organ failure

According to the Ministry of Health, about 20% to 50% of people who develop severe yellow fever may die. As soon as the first signs and symptoms appear, it is essential to seek immediate medical help.

The treatment of yellow fever is only symptomatic, with careful assistance to the patient who, under hospitalization, must remain at rest.

In severe forms, the patient must be treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), to reduce complications and the risk of death.
