The reporting and complaints channel about medical prescriptions that are almost “indecipherable” or impossible to read, created by the CRF/MS (Regional Pharmacy Council in Mato Grosso do Sul), has registered 196 cases so far. The data was reported by the institution this Thursday (25).

The largest number of complaints was received last year: 118.

It was created in 2019, before the pandemic, and remains active. The institution’s concern is that illegible prescriptions can lead to errors when delivering the medicine, with consequences ranging from intoxication with the wrong medicine to death.

To register, you must send an email to [email protected] or via WhatsApp (67) 9635-6563. Another option is to send photos of the handwriting on the prescriptions directly through the “Illegible Prescription – Notify Here” platform on the CRF/MS website.

Judiciary – The debate reached the courts in Mato Grosso do Sul. An action has been underway for more than 10 years asking the public health network in Campo Grande to replace the use of pens with prescriptions typed into the computer and then printed. There was a favorable decision, but Campo Grande City Hall is still appealing.

The MPMS (State Public Ministry) also opened a procedure to check whether prescriptions are already digital in the capital’s public network and at the Regional Hospital of Mato Grosso do Sul. For Sesau (Municipal Health Department) and SES (State Health Department) , requests information on carrying out possible educational campaigns in this regard.

Laws – The Regional Pharmacy Council reinforced that there is a law that requires a legible prescription in the State and an old federal law in this regard.

“The legibility of prescriptions has been mandatory for doctors for over 90 years, in accordance with Federal Decree No. 20,931 of 1932 and has been mandatory for all prescriptions, as a condition for being filled by pharmacies for over 50 years, in accordance with Federal Law No. 5,991 of 1973 (Art. 35)”, he explains.

The state law is No. 3,629, of 2008, which requires the issuance of medical and dental prescriptions to be typed on a computer and printed.
