Headaches, muscle pains and pains behind the eyes, lack of appetite, malaise and high fever. These are just some of the main symptoms of dengue, a disease that has infected 1,937,651 Brazilians since January 1st this year, according to a survey presented by the Secretary of Health and Environmental Surveillance at the Ministry of Health, Ethel Maciel.

Among the cases of dengue recorded this year, 16,494 are considered serious or with warning signs. According to the report, 630 citizens lost their lives to the disease, which has an incidence rate of 954.2 cases for each group of 100 thousand inhabitants.

Dengue is part of a group of diseases called arboviruses, which are characterized by being caused by viruses transmitted by arthropod vectors, as defined by the Ministry of Health. In the country, the dengue vector is the female Aedes aegypti mosquito.

According to the agency, elements such as urbanization, disorderly population growth, poor basic sanitation and climatic factors maintain favorable conditions for the presence of the vector, with impacts on the transmission dynamics of these arboviruses. The Instituto Trata Brasil also highlights that, in addition to climatic factors, the lack of adequate sanitation favors the appearance of mosquito breeding sites.

Fernando Marinho Alves, COO of Dezjato Desentupidora explains that, what few people imagine, is that clogging of sewage networks can contribute to the proliferation of dengue.

“Open sewage, in itself, is not a potential source of the dengue mosquito, since Aedes aegypti only proliferates in clean water”, he points out. “Despite this, clogging impairs the flow of rainwater, which, in turn, can contribute to the formation of pools of semi-clean water, which are ideal for the development of mosquitoes”, he adds.

Alves also highlights that, often, puddles in the private sector can become dengue outbreaks. “There is also a lack of awareness about the risks of these puddles, since when there is a blockage in the backyard, or in a garage, the water does not drain”, he says.

He points out that, as the rains occur in the summer, the ponding increases, as the volume of water has nowhere to go. If there is no unblocking, so that the sewage piping, gutters or rainwater system works, the place can generate puddles of clean water and, consequently, a breeding ground for dengue mosquitoes.

“It is essential to hire a professional unblocker to unclog the sewage network, gutters and rainwater, so that the volume of the puddle drains normally to its natural destination”, says Alves. “Many empty properties, without residents, may be in this situation, contributing to the proliferation of mosquitoes”, she highlights.

According to Alves, an unblocking company has different types of equipment to carry out the unblocking service, such as electro-rotating machines, special rods with cranks and even combined vacuum trucks and high pressure/flow hydrojetting in order to unclog the pipes and drain volumes of puddles quickly.

“The strategy is to locate the point in the pipe that is obstructed by some massive object or construction debris, for example, and unclog it, leaving these pipes free for the natural flow of these volumes of water”, he explains.

Dengue brings harm to society

The COO of Dezjato Desentupidora notes that, in addition to its risk to human life, as a water-borne disease, dengue causes a series of inconveniences, such as removing people from their work duties.

“Dengue has an impact on the worker, the company where he works and the country as a whole, since, after 15 days of absence, the taxpayer becomes dependent on the State, causing costs for society with hours not worked “, he articulates.

“In addition, the explosion of dengue cases in society incurs public expenses for the SUS (Unified Health System) and private expenses for the treatment of infected people”, he adds.
