The president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto, responded to criticism from President Lula and PT president, Gleisi Hoffmannon the conduct of national monetary policy.
When talking about the inflation report this Thursday, 28th, Roberto Campos Neto declared that he is reaching the target, with “the minimum cost to society”.
“The objective is to make inflation reach the target, which is determined by the government, by the National Monetary Council (CMN). The objective is to bring this inflation to the target with the minimum cost to society”said the president of the BC.
“The minimum cost in terms of growth, unemployment, credit contraction. When we look at what has been done in the last year and a half, Brazil is making inflation converge, even if the last mile is more painful. The BC promoted a convergence process at a very low cost”declared the executive.
Falling in the polls, President Lula (PT) attacked the president of the Central Bank at the beginning of March due to the basic interest rate.
“This citizen, when he leaves the Central Bank, will have to measure what he did for this country. Because, in fact, what he is doing right now is contributing to the delay in this country’s economic growth.”said Lula.
“What he is contributing to is making the Brazilian people spend longer waiting for the opportunity to work, to earn a little more salary. And that has no explanation.”he added.
