Japan’s Toyota plans to launch a mass battery-electric Hilux pickup truck by the end of 2025, the president of its Thailand unit announced on Tuesday. This announcement comes shortly after the Thai government revealed that Japanese automaker Isuzu Motors also plans to manufacture its battery-powered D-MAX pickup truck in the country by 2025.

Thailand is recognized as an important regional center for the manufacturing of automobiles, especially pickup trucks, destined for both the domestic and export markets. During the Bangkok International Motor Show, Toyota Thailand’s Noriaki Yamashita revealed to reporters that the electric Hilux could be ready by the end of 2025. However, he did not specify the vehicle’s production location.

The Toyota Thailand executive also announced that six units of the electric Hilux will be delivered to the tourist city of Pattaya, in eastern Thailand, for testing as public transport next month.

Toyota has not yet announced the technical specifications of the future electric pickup truck, including engine power or battery specifications. However, there is speculation that it may share the mechanical set of the BZ4x electric SUV.

The package for the new electric Hilux is not confirmed, but it should be an electric motor with around 200 hp and a lithium-ion battery with a gross capacity of 71.4 kWh (64 kWh net). This could result in a range of approximately 250 km per charge.

If the electric Hilux actually arrives with this range, it is possible to consider it a disappointment, considering that it is a car aimed at work and transporting loads. A range of 250 km is very low for those who need to use the vehicle intensively on a daily basis.
