Brazilian creates art using elements of nature and is promoted by Viola Davis

It is very likely that you have already seen some content on social media that shows a wall painted with a portrait of a person and with the “hair” made up of the crown of a natural tree. This work is by the artist Fábio Gomes, from Trindade (GO). Photos of his murals have already traveled the world on the internet.

Fábio was a bricklayer’s assistant. His colleagues always praised him and encouraged him to paint. Eight years ago, he decided to make a career transition. “In the beginning it wasn’t easy, I had financial difficulties, problems eating”, explains the artist in a video interview with Planeta. Everything changed when, at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, around four years ago, American actress Viola Davis shared on her profile a photo of one of her works on a wall in Trindade (GO).

“I became known internationally. From then on, several people started to hire me, there was no lack of service anymore”, says Fábio, explaining that, soon after, the mother of the singer Beyoncé also publicized her work. “Every artist dreams of being recognized, of being valued. Knowing that you are doing what you love, transmitting a message and being able to make a living from it is rewarding.”

Portrait of nature

“I have always been a passionate guy by nature. I portray fauna and flora to show the riches we have in Brazil and the importance of environmental preservation,” she says.

He mixes his ink art with elements of nature. In addition to the walls, Fábio also makes walls and canvases, always portraying black or indigenous people, animals and plants: “I really like portraying indigenous people, because, for me, they are the main people to care for and preserve nature”.

“I have a following all over the world and I always try to show the riches of Brazil”, says the artist, who receives commissions for projects from different parts of the world. For him, it is extremely important to show Brazilian biodiversity to the world.

“How many animals are endangered? Man himself is destroying the planet. We have to start reviewing this and taking care of what is ours”, he concludes.
