The Executive Water Management Agency of the State of Paraíba (Aesa) carried out public consultations on the Coastal Basin Water Resources Plan. On Thursday (25), a hearing was held in Areia; and this Friday (26), in João Pessoa. The document is in the final stages of preparation and should be completed by the end of this year.

UFPB Environmental Engineering student Érico Ferreira participated in the consultation held in the capital of Paraíba and highlighted the importance of the State Government discussing the basin plan with the population. “From this document we will have the technical capacity to develop actions in order to minimize environmental impacts, which is why it is important to hear the opinion of teachers, students, farmers and also representatives of public and private institutions”, he commented.

According to Aesa’s Director of Monitoring and Control, Beranger Arnaldo de Araújo, the hearings were held in four stages of the plan’s preparation. “This is a participatory process divided into phases. Each stage is first presented to a technical monitoring group, after approval from this group we proceed to public consultations in four stages: diagnosis, scenario, action proposals and now the completion of this work that began in 2021”, he explained.

For the representative of the company hired to prepare the plan, Fernando Meireles, it is essential that municipal, state and federal bodies work together to execute the plan. “We are going to propose an institutional pact for the management of water resources between all the entities that have been identified in the areas of these basins, so that they all assume their commitment. Let it be a partnership, in fact, to put the plan into operation so that it does not just remain on paper”, he anticipated.

The Water Resources Plan for the Coastal Basins of Paraíba is a management instrument that will allow better management of water resources in the studied area, considering social, economic and environmental aspects with the aim of guaranteeing the rational and sustainable use of water.
