French-Spanish pilot Olivier Masurel, champion of aerobatic flying, died in a plane crash this Monday (6), in the Castile-La Mancha region, in Spain. The aircraft piloted by Masurel collided with a vulture during the return flight to Madrid, after performing at an air show in San Javier, in the province of Murcia.
According to information from the regional government’s Emergency Response Coordination Center, the accident occurred around 6pm yesterday, near the CM-3012 road, in the municipality of Alcazar de San Juan. Firefighters were called and, upon arriving at the scene, they found the plane in flames. The pilot, the only occupant of the aircraft, succumbed to his injuries and died at the scene.
In an official note, the San Javier Airshow, the event where Masurel had performed, mourned the pilot’s death and paid condolences to his family and friends. “We are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the fatal accident that killed Olivier Masurel, an aerobatic pilot who participated in the air festival. A vulture collided with his cabin during the return flight, causing his death. The accident happened after the end of the festival, few minutes before he returned to his destination. We join his family and friends in this sad loss”, declared the event organizers.
Masurel, 42 years old, was an experienced pilot and passionate about aerial acrobatics. He collected titles in several international competitions and was known for his skill and daring in aerial maneuvers.
