A court in Cuba imposed sentences of up to 15 years in prison on 13 people who participated in protests in August 2022, as reported by human rights group Justicia 11J. The information is from The Antagonist.

According to the group, ten men and three women, all already detained, were informed on Friday, the 26th, about the sentences for sedition, contempt, enemy propaganda and sabotage. Penalties vary between four and 15 years in prison.

On August 18 and 19, the 13 convicts took to the streets to demand better living conditions and an end to prolonged electricity cuts.

According to the Miami-based NGO Cubalex, the group was tried in January in a court in Camagüey, in central Cuba.

Power shortages reached a peak in 2022, with daily electricity supply cuts across the island.

Protests in Cuba reflect the people’s hunger

In March of this year, Cubans returned to protest in the streets against the communist dictatorship.

Demonstrations took place in at least six cities: Santiago de Cuba, Bayamo, Ciego de Ávila, Santa Marta, Cárdenas and Marianao.

The most common phrases shouted by the protesters were “freedom”, “homeland and life”, “we are hungry”, “we can’t take it anymore” and “we want food”. There were also requests for electricity supply.

As usual, the dictatorship cut off internet access to prevent more people from learning about the protests.
