Joilson Junior falls in the 1st round of the Wrestling Pre-Olympic

The World Wrestling Pre-Olympics in Istanbul, Turkey, began in the early hours of this Thursday (9). The first day featured Greco-Roman wrestling in the under-77kg category. Joyson Junior was the only representative from Brazil in this class. However, the Brazilian lost in the first round of the tournament and had no chance of going to the Paris Olympics.

Joilson Junior’s fight took place around 4 am, and his opponent was the Russian Tsimur Berdyieu. The duel lasted one minute and forty seconds, and the Brazilian ended up losing 9-0. Afterwards, the Russian ended up losing, and ended the Brazilian’s chances of a playoff. Thus, Joilson, silver medalist at the Pan American Games in Santiago 2023, said goodbye to the World Pre-Olympic Games in Istanbul.

Those who did well in the category were the Russian fighter Kiryl Maskevich, the Danish Turpal Bisultanov, the Georgian Lasha Gobadze and the Azerbaijani Rafig Huseynov. They have won all their fights, and are one victory away from qualifying for the Olympics.

Still in Istanbul

The last Olympic wrestling trials run until this Sunday (12). Team Brasil still has five other athletes in the event. In the women’s freestyle, Laís Nunes, Giullia Penalber, Sabrina Gama and Kamila Barbosa are the Brazilian representatives. Meanwhile, Pedro Samuel competed in freestyle. Finally, to qualify for Paris, athletes must be finalists in their category or the best third-place finisher. Check out this Friday’s agenda:

Women’s Freestyle

Athletes Kamila Barbosa (50 kg), Sabrina Gama (53 kg), Giullia Penalber (57 kg) and Laís Nunes (62 kg) compete in the Women’s Freestyle qualifiers, at 4 am. Finally, if they advance in the competition, the semifinals of their categories will take place at 12 pm.
