Gisela Gaytán, 38, a current candidate for mayor of a municipality in the Mexican state of Guanajuato, was shot dead on Monday, 1st, after her first rally. The information comes from the French news agency AFP.

The country’s president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, condemned the crime this Tuesday, 2. “It’s a sad day, because yesterday they murdered the candidate for mayor of Celaya. These events are quite regrettable, there are people who are fighting to assert their democracy,” López Obrador said at a press conference.

Gaytán, who was running for mayor of Celaya with the Morena party, was shot dead, as reported by the state prosecutor’s office. She was murdered in the community of San Miguel Octopan, in Celaya, while meeting with her supporters. During the visit, after passing through a city garden, several explosions were heard, as recorded by the site’s security cameras.

“The candidate for mayor was murdered with gunshots and three more people were injured,” said a statement from the state Public Prosecutor’s Office.

According to the Secretary of Security, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, since October, when the process for the general elections began on June 2, at least 15 people, including candidates and pre-candidates for regional positions, have been murdered.

The investigators responsible for the case reported that Gaytán had requested protection from the authorities, but received no response, raising questions about possible negligence on the part of the government.
