10 dead: Rain causes Rio Grande do Sul to declare a state of public calamity

The governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite (PSDB), declared a state of public calamity after more than 100 municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul were affected by intense rains. The decision was published on the night of a public holiday Wednesday, 1st, in an extraordinary edition of the official diary of State. The storms have already left 10 people dead and at least 21 people missing.

The measure highlights the severity of the impacts of rain, floods, hail, floods, floods and windstorms in the State, being categorized as Level III disasters, classified by substantial damage and losses. The decree will remain in force for 180 days.

The decree establishes that state public administration bodies and entities must provide immediate support to the affected areas, in collaboration with the State Coordination of Protection and Civil Defense.

Furthermore, the text provides for the possibility for affected municipalities to request similar assistance, whose requests will be evaluated and approved by the State, in an attempt to provide a more agile and coordinated response to the emergency.
