Blumenau begins vaccination against dengue through the SUS next Monday (6). The first 5,057 doses should arrive in the city this week, and will cover the public between 10 and 14 years of age. According to the city hall, the municipality has around 20 thousand people in this age group. This means that other shipments of the vaccine will be needed to vaccinate everyone.

Initially, the vaccine will be available in general outpatient clinics in Centro, Garcia, Velha, Itoupava, Escola Agrícola, Badenfurt and Fortaleza. During the week, stations with active vaccine room will also be supplied with doses of the vaccine. The guidance is that parents and guardians look for one of these units with their children taking the booklet to guarantee immunization.

The dengue vaccine is administered in a two-dose schedule, with an interval of three months between doses. The objective is to reduce hospitalizations and deaths from the disease. This year alone, 17 people died in Blumenau because of dengue and hospitalization rates are high, with almost 10% of ICU beds occupied in Vale do Itajaí, according to the State government.

The Secretary of Health Promotion, Jaqueline Mocelin, made an appeal:

— In addition to working on prevention, we can now give Blumenau residents more security in relation to the spread of the disease. We ask that the target audience look for health units with an active vaccination room and look for the vaccine.

Recommendations

  • Vaccines with attenuated viruses, such as MMR and yellow fever, can be administered 30 days after vaccination against dengue;
