Caxias do Sul issues evacuation alert due to risk of dam collapse

The Complexo Dal Bó dam, in Caxias do Sul, approaches its overflow level this Thursday morning. With the large volume of water, the floodgates were completely opened, which increases flooding in the region. The Autonomous Municipal Water and Sewage Service (Samae) of The city issued an evacuation alert.

According to the agency, the risk area ranges from the vicinity of the dam to approximately the location of the Tega Sewage Treatment Station, following the course of the Tega River. In the projection of flooding due to a possible rupture, 18 locations are in the path of the water with estimated wave arrival times ranging from 2 seconds, in the nearest streets, to 2:30 am, at the mouth of the Antas River.

The Fire Department, Civil Defense, FAS, Housing Department, Municipal Guard and other security bodies are in the region alerting families and assisting in evacuation. Engineers are also at the dam assessing the possibility of dam failure due to heavy rains.
