Since the start of the war between Israel and the Hamas group, on October 7, 2023, the NGO has participated in several meal distribution operations. In March, WCK was part of an immense action to send and deliver humanitarian aid using a ship that left Cyprus and docked at an improvised port in the Palestinian enclave. The initiative allowed the arrival of dozens of tons of supplies in the territory where the population is starving.

International community reacts

The United States, Israel’s main ally, said it was “deeply disturbed” by the attack. “Humanitarian workers must be protected, as they provide help that the Palestinians desperately need. We demand that Israel immediately investigate what happened,” said Adrienne Watson, spokesperson for the United States National Security Council, on the social network X.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that an Australian woman, Lalzawmi “Zomi” Frankcom, was among the victims. “It is completely unacceptable. Australia demands that all people involved in the deaths of aid workers are held accountable,” the prime minister said.

The Polish government asked Israel for explanations about the incident. The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, also condemned the attack. “Despite all the calls to protect civilians and humanitarian workers, we continue to see innocent people being killed,” he posted on the social network X.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health, administered by the Hamas group, said it had recorded five deaths “in an Israeli bombing attack on a WCK vehicle” in a hospital in Deir el-Balah, in the center of the Gaza Strip. A statement indicated that the victim, a Palestinian national, worked as a driver and translator for the group.
