There are films that end up becoming beloved classics to the point that we forget that they were not well received at the time. A combination of harsh criticism and commercial failure of the kind that shakes the minds of some of those responsible.

Unfortunately, this was the case with The Last Great Hero, one of the best films of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s career. A sensational work of action and fantasy directed by John McTiernan, with whom he had previously made Predator. A powerful work that maintains its charm and fun, and is available for rent or digital purchase on Amazon, Apple TV and Google Play platforms.

Ten-year-old Danny Madigan lives in crime-ridden New York with his widowed mother, Irene. After his father’s death, Danny consoles himself by watching action films, especially a series starring police officer Jack Slater, in Nick’s run-down cinema, who is also the projectionist. Nick gives Danny a magical movie ticket to check out Jack Slater IV before its official release.

During the film, Danny is transported to the film’s fictional world, interrupting Slater during a car chase. After the initial shock, the young man finally has the chance to escape his depressing reality and explore his passion and knowledge for action films.
