A representation of Jesus’ face was recreated using artificial intelligence, taking inspiration from the Holy Shroud. This fabric is venerated in Christian tradition as the cloak that wrapped Jesus after his crucifixion.

To celebrate the 90th anniversary of the first public display of the Shroud, the United Kingdom’s Daily Star newspaper carried out the project. The Midjourney AI tool was employed to generate the image.

The Holy Shroud and its Importance

The Holy Shroud is an object of great significance and discussion among the faithful. The fabric is believed to show the true face of Jesus.

According to the Christian narrative, the Shroud was the sheet that covered Jesus after his death, as described in Matthew 27:59: “Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen sheet.”

Measuring 4.2 meters long by 1.1 meters wide, the Shroud has been on public display for approximately 600 years, sparking debate about its veracity.

In 1390, Bishop Pierre d’Arcis wrote to Pope Clement VII, expressing doubts about the authenticity of the Shroud, suggesting that it could be an elaborate hoax.
