The children’s show “Piracema” will have a short season at the Ruth de Souza Theater, in Santa Teresa. On an enchanting journey along the São Francisco River, the montage addresses themes related to Brazilian culture, science and the environment. Furthermore, the show features a character who communicates through Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS), providing accessibility and inclusion.

Written by Juliana Pamplona, based on content from the magazine Ciência Hoje das Crianças, and directed by Fernanda Avellar, the play “Piracema” takes us on an exciting adventure starring an anteater and two curimatãs. The three brave fish embark on the piracema journey up Velho Chico. They face currents, challenge dams and overcome various obstacles. However, the biggest fear they face is the frightening presence of pollution. As they avoid environmental threats, they discover fantastic beings that inhabit the legends kept by the waters, such as the imposing Boiúna, a giant snake, and the mysterious Ipupiara, a sea monster. But what surprises everyone most is a third, very unusual legend that emerges from the depths of the river: that of a skateboarding girl who dreams of becoming a scientist to contribute to the betterment of the planet.

The shells, props created by Laura Levín, are portals of legends and secrets that weave the narrative. The soundtrack, created by Ricardo Góes, mixes live music and mechanical elements, permeating every aspect of the show. There is a diverse selection that ranges from classics of Brazilian popular music, such as Chico Buarque, Milton Nascimento and Luiz Gonzaga, to original compositions created exclusively for the play, such as “Luso Coco” and “Peixinho Dourado” (an adaptation of TikTok, parodying the hit “Lovezinho”). The costumes designed by Dani Lima establish a unique connection between the traditional and the contemporary. Scenographer Marieta Spada, in turn, delimits a scenic space measuring 5m by 5m with practicable areas and mini junctions where everything happens.

The play also stands out for its inclusive approach, bringing in interpreter Diana Nascimento to bring to life a character who communicates through Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS). The interpretation in LIBRAS not only enriches the play, but also forms an integral part of the narrative, presenting a goddess of the waters who interacts with the characters and helps them in carrying out the piracema.

“The initiative values the creation of specific and careful work aimed at young people. And the union of theater with scientific dissemination is the basis for this project”, highlights Fernanda Avellar. “Piracema is a metaphor for life, for our efforts against the so-called natural order to create personal and collective stories. A call for children to come together, listen to each other, connect with nature and understand their ancestry, on a path to understanding otherness”, she concludes.
