Japan is investigating two deaths and more than 100 hospitalizations possibly linked to the use of a cholesterol supplement known as beni koji.
According to the AP news agency, a representative of the Japanese Ministry of Health warned of the possibility of more victims in the coming days and recommended that people stop consuming any product containing beni koji, especially those with health problems such as fragile kidneys.
Kobayashi Pharmaceutical has removed products containing red yeast rice, an ingredient associated with consumer complaints of kidney problems, from the market. These products, which did not require a prescription, were manufactured by fermenting steamed rice with food fungi.
In addition to the supplements, more than 40 products from other companies that contained beni koji, such as miso paste, crackers and vinegar sauce, were recalled. Although all of the products were manufactured in Japan, it is unclear whether any of the raw materials were imported.
Although recalls of imported health supplements have occurred before, this is the first major recall of a domestically produced supplement, according to Japanese media reports.
Beni koji is a supplement made from rice fermented with the Monascus fungus, a traditional technique in Asian cuisine. In Japan, it is known for its versatility and characteristic flavor, being used in various dishes, from sauces to drinks.
In addition to its flavor, beni koji is recognized for its potential health benefits, including lowering cholesterol, although medical research warns of the risk of organ damage depending on the chemical composition.
