The International Court of Justice (ICJ), the highest UN court, adopted this Thursday (28) additional precautionary measures against Israel and demanded that it prevent its Army from committing “acts of genocide” against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip or prevent the delivery of humanitarian assistance.

The ICJ, which has its headquarters in The Hague, Netherlands, warned that civilians in the Gaza Strip “no longer face only the risk of starvation”, as the court had warned on January 26, when it called on Israel to take urgent measures to prevent the genocide, but that “hunger is already setting in” and “the catastrophic living conditions of Palestinians in Gaza have become even worse”.

The court demands that Israel “take all necessary and effective measures” to ensure the “unimpeded and large-scale” provision of basic services and humanitarian assistance, including food, water, electricity, fuel, shelter, clothing, hygiene and sanitation requirements. , medical supplies and healthcare.

The accusation of genocide against Israel was presented to the ICJ by South Africa. At a hearing in January, the Israeli delegation denied that this crime was taking place in Gaza.

“The key component of genocide, the intention to destroy a people, in whole or in part, is entirely absent. What Israel seeks when operating in Gaza is not to destroy people, but to protect its people, who are under attack on multiple fronts, and to do so in accordance with the law, even when facing a cruel enemy,” he pointed out, claiming that they are care was taken to minimize civilian casualties.

In an interview with CNN this month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denied that Israel is preventing humanitarian aid from entering Gaza.

“Our policy is not hunger, but rather the entry of humanitarian aid as needed, and as much as necessary,” Netanyahu said.

In a report released on the 20th, the Israeli-American Public Affairs Committee stated that since the start of Israel’s war against Hamas in October last year, 280,080 tons of humanitarian aid in 15,207 trucks have entered the Gaza Strip.

“Substantial amounts of this aid do not reach civilians in Gaza in a timely manner due to the ineffectiveness of the UN and humanitarian organizations in processing and distributing the aid. Hamas contributes to the problem by regularly stealing and diverting aid intended for civilians,” the committee charged. (With EFE Agency)
