Prince Phillip will be exhumed and buried next to Elizabeth II

-

After the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, the body of her husband Prince Philip will be exhumed and transferred to the Memorial Chapel to be reburied alongside his wife.

In keeping with British traditions, the queen will be buried in a vault in St George’s Chapel or King George 6th (her father) alongside her husband.

Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, died on 9 April 2021, aged 99, and was buried in an opening in the stone floor called the Royal Vault, the Royal Vault, inside St George’s Chapel. It was already only a temporary destination, because he had to be moved to be at the queen’s side.

In this same chapel are buried the Queen’s parents, Queen Mother Elizabeth I and Princess Margaret, sister of Elizabeth II, as well as several members of different dynasties of the royal family, from the Plantagenets to the Tudors.

That is, it is where the couples King Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville are buried, as well as the famous King Henry VIII and Jane Seymour.

What will the queen’s funeral be like?

Under the protocols set out in “Operation London Bridge”, Buckingham Palace’s action plan, the Queen’s body is to be buried in the memorial chapel on the 19th.

The body is in the Palace of Westminster, in London, for the population to pay their respects.

Then it goes to the Capela de São Jorge (St. George’s Chapel), which was the scene of historical events for the royal family in recent years, such as the wedding of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, or those of Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, the christening of the Queen’s great-grandchildren.

The last time we saw her inside was following the funeral of Prince Philip, when Elizabeth II was forced to sit in isolation, because of the pandemic, generating one of the saddest and most striking images of her reign.

St George’s Chapel is the second main mausoleum of the British monarchy today, after Westminster Cathedral, which holds more tombs of kings of the past.

The first thing to remember is that despite being a “chapel”, the beautiful and gothic São Jorge has the dimensions of a cathedral.

It is attached to Windsor Castle, which has been home to important English historical figures since the 9th century. From William the Conqueror to Henry the 8th passed through it.

The chapel began to be built in the reign of Edward IV, in 1475, and was dedicated to Santa Maria (despite being called São Jorge), adopting the perpendicular Gothic style.

It was the queen herself who chose to be buried there.
