Investigate the diasporic process and the historical connection between Brazil and Africa through films, research and conversations. This is the motto of the free film exhibition “Afrodiasporic Brands: History, Cinema and Memory”, promoted by Quiprocó Films and for Casa de Rui Barbosa Foundation and that, on the day May 9th at 6pmwill present the film “Queen Nzinga has arrived”, by Júnia Torres and Isabel Casimira. After the session, filmmaker Júnia Torres and researcher Luciana Lúcia da Silva participate in a chat with curator Eduardo Possidonio, who will also mediate.

“Afrodiasporic Brands” continues until July, promoting free cinema sessions, followed by critical conversations, to address topics such as the links between Brazil and Africa, the material and immaterial heritage generated by the Afrodiasporic process and its preservation, the struggle of different black and Afro-descendant peoples permanence and memory, among other themes. It is curated by historians Eduardo Possidonio and Ivana Stolze Lima, specialists in the history of Africa and African heritage in Brazil.

Queen Nzinga has arrived”, directed by Júnia Torres and Isabel Casimira, is a documentary that presents the story of the Casimira family. Through three generations, the family matriarchs have kept the tradition of Guarda de Congado alive. The Treze de Maio female reign, commanded by the experienced Isabel Casimira, is just a reflection of the various territories of Minas Gerais that began their hierarchical expansion through the domination of Queen Nzinga, an important figure in the resistance against Portuguese rule in Africa in the 19th century. XVII.

The film has already won awards such as: Best Feature Film at the III Mostra de Cinema Negro Adélia Sampaio, Special Jury Prize at the XV Panorama Internacional Coisa de Cinema da Bahia and Honorable Mention/Pierre Verger Award from the Brazilian Association of Anthropology, 2020.

Project unites cinema, history, memory and scientific dissemination

The exhibition sessions will take place once a month, and the following films will also be shown: “Atlântico Negro: Na Rota dos Orixás”, by Renato Barbieri (June 13); and “Pedra da Memória: Diálogos Brasil Benim”, by Renata Amaral (July 4). The exhibition also marks the resumption of events at Casa de Rui Barbosa.

“In the country we live in, we are provoked to reflect daily on our relations with the African people. The documentaries shown are the result of in-depth research, presenting community and cultural practices related to the diasporic process and are an invitation to reflection through the language of cinema”, says Dora Motta, production coordinator at Quiprocó Filmes.

More than a cinema show, “Afrodiasporic Brands: History, Cinema and Memory” is a scientific dissemination and critical training project for understanding the links between Brazil and Africa and carried out through the Paulo Gustavo Law.

“Far beyond forced labor, African women, men and children brought knowledge, techniques and community experiences that lend to a history of violence and pain, a possibility of survival, resistance and cultural creation that matters to all of us”, explains curator Ivana Stolze.

The objective is to deepen the discussion about the creative process of films, questioning the theoretical foundations that guide the filmmakers’ approaches, through speeches by researchers who also deal with the themes, as well as the concepts that influence their choices and selections.

“The many dimensions of the crossings in the Atlantic world presented in the documentaries will be a starting point for public reflection and debate that contribute to understanding and lending visibility and value to the Afro-diasporic brands of current Brazil”, concludes Eduardo Possidonio.
